A
series on the history of our wedding traditions from our amazing assistant Bonnie; the truth behind the
superstitions!
We
all know them; the traditions passed down from our mothers and grandmothers.
But where did they come from?

Probably
every bride has heard it…"it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before
the wedding!" This tradition dates way back to the time of the arranged
marriages. Arranged marriages signified
a business deal between the bride’s family and the groom; oh the romance! The
idea of keeping the betrothed apart before the wedding was so that the groom
wouldn't see his future bride, and find her unattractive. Call off the wedding,
and bring shame onto the bride and her family. Thus, the traditional saying
“it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding.” Oh yes, and the veil the bride wears…Its
original purpose was to conceal the brides face up until the very last minute
when the contract could not be revoked.

Although the days of arranged
marriages are behind us in western culture, most brides still don't want their
beloved to see them before the ceremony. Many brides find that this creates an
atmosphere of anticipation and excitement. However, there are a growing number
of couples who find it more intimate if they are able to see each other before
the ceremony. If you do choose to see your groom before the ceremony, you have the
opportunity to create a private moment where you see each other for the first
time, just the two of you. A new twist is to take “first look” photos; so you
can always relive that first moment you saw each other. Another advantage is
you can take your formal pictures of the wedding party while everyone looks
fresh. You might just be able to enjoy
the appetizers you spent time selecting for your close family and friends.

Whether
you choose to remain a mystery on your wedding day, or share a short moment together
before, it is most important that you do what’s best for you and your love.
