Something Old, Something New…. Save that cake!

A series on the history of our wedding traditions; the truth behind the superstitions!

We all know them; the traditions passed down from our mothers and grandmothers. But where did they come from? Are they superstition or time honored traditions…like saving the top layer of the wedding cake?

Don't touch the top layer!  Why?  This tradition actually developed from a very practical consideration. At one time it was common that once a wedding took place, a baby was not too far away. The practical idea creating this tradition was that the bottom of the cake could be for the wedding, and the top could be for the christening. As fancy multi-tiered wedding cakes became the fashion in the 19th century, couples could rationalize the large cakes by saving the top for the christening.

Today, we love our wedding cakes. They have become a focal point for our guest and an expression of the couple. The artistry and time put into their creation is amazing.  However, as beautiful as they maybe and as tasty as they maybe on the day of your wedding, sometimes living in the freezer for a year can really cause it to lose its flavor. Many brides and grooms today are opting to have their baker recreate the top of their wedding cake on their anniversary. Not only does this give you a fresh piece of cake, but it continues your relationship with the baker.  So… if you do need a christening cake down the road you know who to call.
