A series on the history of our wedding traditions from our amazing assistant Bonnie; the truth behind the superstitions!
We
all know them; the traditions passed down from our mothers and grandmothers.
But where did they come from? Are they superstition or time honored traditions?
This
tradition originated from an old English rhyme, "Something old, something
new, something, borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in your shoe."
This time honored tradition has been celebrated by brides for years. The
thought is to follow the rhyme will bring the bride and groom good luck. But
let's break this down.
Something
old….wearing something old symbolizes the brides connection to her family;
using your mother's bracelet or your grandmother's bible.
Something
new….symbolizes the creation of a new union; a new life, a home for the future.
You can really get creative with this one. It can include your veil, bridal
gown, or jewelry.

Something
borrowed….is an expression of giving happiness to the bride; a token from a
friend or relative that has brought happiness. It could be your parents wedding
song, a brooch, or your grandparents toasting glasses.
Something
blue….is the symbol of fidelity and love. Something blue began in ancient Israel,
where brides wore a blue ribbon in their hair to symbolize this promise to
their husbands.
And
finally, "Sixpence in your shoe," will bring the bride and groom a
life of good fortune.
This tradition is alive and well
today. Now more than ever, couples are really making their wedding day their
own. Incorporating this tradition is a way to keep the old and still have the
flexibly to be creative with the new. You can make it your own.
