Well it was another exciting year of March Madness. In the spirit of March Madness I thought it would be appropriate to show our brides how to use “bracketology” to help them make decisions on vendors, colors, and everything else for their weddings.
For those of you who don’t have to watch sports with your fiancé, let me break it down for you. Every year the NCAA uses all sorts of stats, basketball knowledge, and an elite committee to determine the top 64 college basketball teams in the country to go to the NCAA championship tournament. They rank each team from one to 15; one being the best. There are four divisions and each division has seeds one through 15. The higher seeds play the lower seeds so they have the best chance of advancing to the next round. The first round has 64 teams; the second has 32. If you make it past the first two rounds then you go to the Sweet 16, The Elite Eight, The Final Four and then, the championship which is more commonly called “The Big Dance.” If an underdog knocks off a top seed they are referred to as a “Cinderella” Team. Are you starting to see how this parallels wedding planning?
Okay so here’s how it works…
1. “Bracketology” can be used to make virtually any decision!
2. Research your options in the chosen category.
3. Narrow down to the top choices but use an even number because it’s easier.
4. Now, seed the options. This means, you rank them; one being the best.
5. Create your bracket, pitting a high seed against a low seed.
6. The more options you have, the more arms your bracket will have. Separate your strongest seeds in different divisions so that you don’t knock them out in the first round.
What color bridesmaid dress should I go with for a May wedding?
The stronger seeds usually win but you could have an upset depending on the circumstance. Say you fall in love with a pink floral arrangement, it will look weird to wear pink dresses with all pink flowers so, navy, teal and sunshine yellow come into play. That knocks off your #1 seed so you could have a “Cinderella” going to the big dance!
Now, let’s use this method to decide which vendors will make it to your “Big Dance!” Will your photographer be a “Cinderella” meaning she/he isn’t as well know, doesn’t have as much experience but she has a great eye for detail, is dependable, has great prices and is easy to work with. Or, will your photographer be a powerhouse like Kentucky (they won the Championship- a one seed who went all the way). He/she has been around the block, comes highly recommended, has a great website, and was featured on The Knot. Or you could go with the standout freshman who is just building her business but is already a rock star. In the words of Dickie V, she’s a “Diaper Dandy Baby!” If you don’t know who he is, look him up before you just start throwing out his quotes to your fiancé!
This method is great for indecisive brides but you can’t rely on the bracket alone, you have to do your research first! As you weigh the pros and cons of each matchup you will realize that you already know who is going to win. The nice thing about ranking your options is that if your first choice is booked you can go on to your two seed.
This method is also a very clever way to impress your fiancé on your sports knowledge and get him involved in the planning process.
Alright ladies, good luck, I hope the best vendors get to cut down the net at the end of the game!
